Biography

Geoffrey Maguire specializes in contemporary Latin American film, literature, and visual art, with particular interests in cultural memory, queer representation, sexuality, and gender. His current research project, Un/Natural: Marine Sexualities Queer Ecological, engages contemporary queer theory and dialogues with the blue humanities and marine biology through a range of literary, cinematic, and artistic texts. Geoffrey is the author of Bodies of Water (2024) and has published works such as Politics of Postmemory (2017) and New Visions of Adolescence (2018). He will serve as the Hunt-Simes Visiting Chair in Sexuality Studies at the University of Sydney in 2024. Geoffrey teaches both undergraduate and MPhil courses within the Section of Spanish and Portuguese, as well as in Film Studies and Gender Studies. He supervises Year Abroad Projects, Optional Dissertations, and MPhil essays and theses covering a wide array of topics, particularly focusing on Hispanic and Lusophone cinema, literature, and visual art. Geoffrey is also involved in outreach and network building related to queer and transsexuality studies across the University as a trustee of the Society for Latin American Studies and a member of the Cambridge Film Trust, where he helps run the annual Cambridge Film Festival.
