Dr. Geoffrey Maksym

Biography

Geoffrey Maksym is a Professor in the School of Biomedical Engineering at Dalhousie University. His research focuses on airway smooth muscle function and the mechanics of the lung, particularly in relation to asthma and other obstructive lung diseases. Apart from academic responsibilities, he has collaborated with physicians and medical device companies to develop advanced biomedical instruments for measuring lung function in patients. His work in mechanotransduction studies the cells' ability to alter their structure and function in response to mechanical stimuli, which is essential for processes such as blood pressure regulation and wound healing. He has authored and co-authored numerous publications that cover a breadth of topics within lung mechanics and asthma management. The significant projects led by his lab include developing methods for assessing airway health and function, with particular focus on understanding the mechanical properties and contractile behavior of smooth muscle cells.
