Biography

Georg Christ is a Senior Lecturer in Medieval and Early Modern History at the University of Manchester. His academic journey began with a PhD from the University of Basel, focusing on historical research in Venice, Cairo, and Alexandria. He has a profound interest in long-distance trade, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean, where he examines historical economic dynamics related to maritime routes like the Maritime Silk Road and the Hanseatic League from 1200 to 1500. His research spans layered statehood, city-states, maritime empires, and the complexities of premodern commercial diplomacy. He has served as a military observer for the United Nations in the Middle East and led a research group at the University of Heidelberg that concentrated on trading diasporas. His extensive publication record and teaching experience include guiding PhD students through various significant historical topics. He is involved in projects addressing climate change adaptation and digital humanities, emphasizing the impact of communication in the late medieval to early modern period.
