Biography

George Bermann is the Walter Gellhorn Professor of Law at Columbia Law School and a Jean Monnet Professor in European Union Law. He specializes in transnational litigation, arbitration, comparative law, and international trade contracts. With more than four decades of experience, Bermann is a renowned authority in the fields of EU law and international trade, actively serving as an international arbitrator in commercial investment disputes across various sectors including construction, intellectual property, and telecommunications. He is a founding director of the Columbia Journal of European Law and the European Legal Studies Center at Columbia. In addition to his teaching, Bermann is an affiliated faculty member at Sciences Po in Paris and the MIDS Masters Program in International Dispute Settlement in Geneva. He was the chief reporter for the American Law Institute's Restatement of the Law, U.S. Law International Commercial Investor-State Arbitration, a project completed in 2019. Bermann also co-authored the UNCITRAL Guide on the New York Convention and serves as the chair of the Global Advisory Board of the New York International Arbitration Center (NYIAC). He is a founding member of the ICC Court of Arbitration and has been actively involved in legal scholarship and practice.
