Dr. George Christie

Biography

George Christie is the James B. Duke Professor Emeritus at Duke University School of Law. His primary academic interests include torts and jurisprudence, and he has published extensively in these fields. Christie has served as the editor for several significant legal texts, including a casebook on jurisprudence first published in 1973 and a fifth edition of 'Torts' released in 1983. Additionally, he authored the monograph 'The Notion of an Ideal Audience in Legal Argument', which was published in 2000 and later translated into French in 2005. His book 'Philosopher Kings? Adjudication of Conflicting Human Rights and Social Values' was published by Oxford University Press in 2011. Christie earned his A.B. in 1955 and J.D. in 1957 from Columbia University, where he was the editor-in-chief of the Columbia Law Review. He also received a Diploma in International Law from Cambridge University in 1962 and an S.J.D. from Harvard University in 1966. His career includes significant experiences such as practicing law in Washington, D.C., and serving as a Fulbright Scholar at Cambridge. He taught at the University of Minnesota for four years before returning to Washington D.C. for a role as assistant general counsel at the Near East South Asia Agency for International Development. He has held visiting professor positions at numerous prestigious universities across the globe and has been a fellow at the National Humanities Center. His contributions to legal philosophy are recognized through his membership in the Board of Editors for 'Law and Philosophy'.
