Biography

Professor George Christophides serves as the Director of the Vector Immunogenomics Infection Laboratory at Imperial College London. He earned his PhD from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens and began his research career at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory as a Marie Curie Fellow. Since joining Imperial College in 2005 as a Senior Lecturer, he has progressed to Reader and then Professor in 2011. He additionally holds the position of Adjunct Professor at the Cyprus Institute, where he served as an Associate Dean and President. Christophides has played a pioneering role in establishing the field of mosquito functional genomics, contributing significantly to the sequencing of genomes of disease vector mosquitoes. His prominent research has explored genetic engineering of malaria-resistant mosquitoes, supported by funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Christophides is also interested in the intersection of climate change and health, particularly in the Mediterranean region and southern Europe, contributing to impactful reports and initiatives in these areas, thus establishing his reputation as a leading figure in the international scientific community.
