Biography

George Elliott is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the College of Liberal Arts at Purdue University. His research centers on the history of science, with a focus on alchemy, early chemistry, and medicine in colonial New England and the Atlantic world. Elliott delves into what he terms 'saltbox science', particularly examining the work of the late seventeenth-century alchemist and physician Gershom Bulkeley, within the frameworks of space, family, and household. His published work includes an article in Ambix titled 'Gershom Bulkeley, ‘Saltbox Science,’ Colonial New England Laboratory.' He teaches specialized courses on the history of the laboratory and medical practice, alongside global piracy in American and European history. Beginning in Fall 2025, Elliott will serve as an associate editor for educational partnerships and pedagogical resources in the Knowledge Indiana project, which aims to create an innovative interactive online encyclopedia of Indiana's history and culture. Over the years, he has worked as a fellow at Brown University's Center for Digital Scholarship, where he contributed to various projects, including Furnace Fugue, which won the American Historical Association's 2022 Roy Rosenzweig Prize for Creativity in Digital History.
