George Flaherty is an Associate Professor in Art History at the University of Texas at Austin, where he co-directs the Center for Latin American Visual Studies (CLAVIS). His research primarily focuses on modern and contemporary visual and spatial cultures in Mexico and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, as well as the diasporas in the United States. Flaherty’s scholarly interests extend into film and media studies, postcolonial subaltern studies, and Afro-Latin American and Afro-Latinx studies. He is currently working on a book manuscript titled "Cross-Border Renaissances: Race and Revolutionary Art in Mexico and Black America," which examines the cultural exchange and affinities between Mexican and Black artists and intellectuals during the 1920s and 1930s. Flaherty’s work includes the book "Hotel Mexico: Dwelling in 68 Movement," published by University of California Press in 2016, which explores the spatial dimensions of the 1968 student-led democratization movement in Mexico City. His scholarship has appeared in various academic journals and publications, and he has contributed to several anthologies and exhibition catalogs.
