Biography

George Garnett is a historian specializing in medieval history, particularly focusing on English history from the tenth to thirteenth centuries. His extensive research delves into the impact of the Norman Conquest on concepts of kingship, succession, and tenure, as well as political thought and legal history during the medieval and early modern periods. He has supervised numerous research students working on various facets of English and Norman history between the ninth and fifteenth centuries. His published works include a significant study titled "The Norman Conquest and English History: Volume Broken Chain?" which explores the historical discourse surrounding the Conquest. Garnett has also contributed to the subject of political thought by publishing an edition of "Vindiciae, Contra Tyrannos," a critical sixteenth-century Huguenot resistance treatise. In 2021, he received a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship, which aided in his recent publication focusing on the transformative impacts of the Norman Conquest on English historiography and legal theory. Throughout his career, Garnett's scholarship has greatly influenced the understanding of medieval political structures and historiography.
