Biography

George Gehring earned his Ph.D. in Optics from the University of Rochester, focusing on nonlinear optics. He has been teaching at the undergraduate level since 2012 and became a faculty member at Penn State Harrisburg in 2017. Gehring is a member of several professional organizations, including the Optical Society of America (OSA), the American Physical Society (APS), and the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). He serves as an advisor for the Penn State Harrisburg Astronomy Club and the E-Sports Club. His research interests include pulse propagation dynamics, slow and fast light systems, and quantum-mechanical barrier tunneling. Gehring investigates the direct analogs of classical electrodynamics in relation to total internal reflection and one-dimensional barrier tunneling. He is also interested in utilizing 3-D printing technologies to create affordable alternatives for common optomechanical devices, contributing to both undergraduate teaching and research lab purposes.
