George Hanna trained at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Scotland, under the mentorship of Professor Sir Alfred Cuschieri in laparoscopic oesophago-gastric surgery. He obtained his FRCS from Edinburgh in 1993 and his PhD from the University of Dundee in 1997, focusing on laparoscopic surgery. In 2003, he joined Imperial College as a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Upper Gastrointestinal Consultant Surgeon. He was promoted to Reader in 2005 and to Professor of Surgical Sciences in 2008. He became the Head of the Division of Surgery in 2012 and the Head of the Department of Surgery and Cancer in 2018. His clinical work is based at Hammersmith Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, where he specializes in oesophageal and gastric cancer and advanced laparoscopic surgery. His current research interests include the analysis of volatile organic compounds for biomarker discovery and understanding the molecular drivers of volatile biomarkers. These efforts are supported by research programmes from Cancer Research-UK, Pancreatic Cancer-UK, and the Medical Research Council. His research aims to develop and validate a non-invasive breath test for the diagnostic detection of various gastrointestinal cancers. He holds several leadership positions, including President of the European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons for 2023-2025.
