Biography

George Hripcsak is the Vivian Beaumont Allen Professor of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. He holds degrees in chemistry, medicine, and biostatistics, and is a board-certified internist. His research interests focus on the clinical information stored in electronic health records and its use in improving healthcare. Hripcsak employs techniques such as causal inference, nonlinear time series analysis, machine learning, and knowledge engineering to develop methods that produce reliable medical evidence from data. He leads the Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) coordinating center, part of an international network that includes thousands of collaborators across 83 countries and health records of one billion unique patients. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American College of Medical Informatics, and has been awarded the 2022 Morris F. Collen Award for Excellence by the American College of Medical Informatics. Hripcsak chaired the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University from 2007 to 2022 and has published over 500 scientific papers.
