Biography

George Iordachescu is a political ecologist focused on politics, conservation, and environmental futures. With a background in social anthropology, sociology, and history, Iordachescu's work spans human geography, green criminology, and conservation social sciences. His research interests envelop governance of nature protection within the European Union, human-bear conflicts and coexistence, environmental crime, and environmental politics in Europe. Currently, he is the Principal Investigator of the ERC-funded project GreenFrontier, which explores the politics of conservation and the unjust ecological exchanges in European peripheries from 2024 to 2029. This project examines environmental justice issues associated with the strict protection of nature in marginal mountain areas across Europe. His previous work includes investigating hidden dynamics of the illegal wildlife trade affecting European species at Sheffield University, funded by the ESRC under the Beastly Business project. Iordachescu also researched the implications of EU regulations on the criminalization and securitization of illegal logging in the Carpathian Mountains as part of the BIOSEC project. He earned his PhD in 2019 from the IMT School of Advanced Studies in Lucca, Italy, with a dissertation that explored the development of strict protection of wild nature in Eastern Europe and its impacts on local livelihoods.
