Biography

George Loewenstein is the Herbert Simon University Professor of Economics and Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University. He also holds visiting professor positions at the London School of Economics and Political Science, the Arctic University of Norway, and the BRIQ Institute of Behavior and Inequality at the University of Bonn. Loewenstein received his Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University in 1985 and has previously held academic positions at the University of Chicago and Carnegie Mellon University. His research interests focus on the intersection of psychology and economics, including topics such as economic analyses of boredom, insecure self-esteem, and the reluctance to thank or apologize. He is a pioneer in behavioral economics and neuroeconomics, and has authored over 300 journal articles as well as numerous book chapters and edited volumes. Loewenstein has served on the editorial boards of various journals and has been a member of multiple National Academy of Sciences panels. He has advised organizations including the NIH and USDA and has taught behavioral economics courses internationally.
