George Macones, M.D., MSCE, is the chair of the Department of Women's Health at Dell Medical School, University of Texas at Austin. An internationally recognized expert in obstetrics, he provides clinical care as a UT Health Austin provider. Originally from Philadelphia, Macones earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Pennsylvania Hospital. He went on to complete a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, which included earning a master's degree in clinical epidemiology from the University of Pennsylvania. He spent ten years on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania before moving to Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where he served for 14 years as chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Macones has held leadership positions in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He has authored 400 publications, with research funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and the National Cancer Institute, among others. Currently, he serves on the board of directors for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Board of Family Medicine, and is a deputy editor for the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the National Academy of Medicine.
