Dr. George Nakhla

Biography

George Nakhla is a Professor and the Salamander Chair in Environmental Engineering at Western University. He has a distinguished academic background, holding a Ph.D. and an M.Sc. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA, as well as a B.Sc. from the University of Khartoum, Sudan. His primary research interests encompass various aspects of environmental engineering, particularly focusing on the treatment of wastewater through biological processes. He specializes in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment, biological nutrient removal processes, the detoxification of hazardous contaminants, and bioremediation of soil and groundwater. Professor Nakhla’s expertise is recognized internationally, and he has made significant contributions to the field, including the treatment of landfill leachate. His academic work is characterized by a commitment to improving environmental sustainability through innovative engineering solutions. He continues to lead research initiatives that address pressing environmental challenges while fostering a learning environment for students at Western University.
