Biography

George Nemhauser is a Professor Emeritus in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering. He received his Ph.D. in operations research from Northwestern University in 1961 and initially joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins University until 1969. He later joined Cornell University as a professor of operations research and industrial engineering, serving as the school's director from 1977 to 1983. Dr. Nemhauser has held visiting faculty positions at the University of Leeds in the U.K., the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics at the University of Louvain in Belgium, and the University of Melbourne in Australia. As a Research Director at CORE, he contributed significantly to the field and served on the council of the Operations Research Society of America, ultimately becoming its president and editor for the journal Operations Research. He has been recognized with numerous honors, including membership in the National Academy of Engineering and various prestigious awards for his lifetime achievements in optimization. His current research interests focus on solving large-scale mixed-integer programming problems and their applications, notably in the field of sports scheduling, where he collaborates with major league baseball and university athletic conferences.
