Biography

Dr. George Nicolaou is an Associate Professor in Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at Western University. He completed his Medical School at the University of Witwatersrand, followed by an Anesthesiology Residency at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Nicolaou also underwent a Clinical Research Fellowship in Thoracic Vascular Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management. He works at the London Health Sciences Centre and serves as the Director of City-Wide Clinical Services in Anesthesia and Fellowship Coordinator for Thoracic Vascular Anesthesia. His current initiatives include developing a multidisciplinary Pediatric Chronic Pain Program in Southwestern Ontario, and he has contributed to the establishment of an advanced VATS surgery anesthesia workshop. Dr. Nicolaou's research focuses on lung protection strategies during lung ventilation, spinal cord protection in thoracic aortic surgery, and investigating the implementation of Artificial Intelligence for real-time perioperative ECG monitoring. He is involved in several key clinical trials, including studies on postoperative outcomes in thoracic surgery patients, improving the quality of recovery following VATS procedures, and assessing the impact of COVID-19 on perioperative management.
