Biography

George Steinmetz is the Charles Tilly Collegiate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Michigan. A social theorist and historical sociologist, Steinmetz is recognized for his contributions to understanding states, empires, and social science. His current research projects focus on the emergence of sociology in British and French overseas colonies from the 1930s to the 1960s and the reconstruction of sociology through historical socioanalysis. He has previously worked on Germany's colonies, including Namibia, Samoa, and Qingdao, China, and has researched social policy at both local and central levels in imperial Germany. Steinmetz is also engaged in visual sociology and has studied the rise and fall of Detroit, as well as the epistemology of human sciences and political cultural theory.
