George Steinmetz is the Charles Tilly Collegiate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Michigan. A social theorist and historical sociologist, Steinmetz is recognized for his contributions to understanding states, empires, and social science. His current research projects focus on the emergence of sociology in British and French overseas colonies from the 1930s to the 1960s and the reconstruction of sociology through historical socioanalysis.
