Biography

George Stiny is a theorist of design computation, who joined the Department of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1996 after fifteen years as faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles. He was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California, Los Angeles, where he received a PhD in Engineering. Throughout his career, Stiny has taught at prestigious institutions, including the University of Sydney, the Royal College of Art in London, and the Open University. His contributions largely focus on the invention and refinement of the idea of shape grammars, challenging the critique of the vast majority of existing computer-aided design systems. Currently, he is working on a book about shape to be published by Cambridge University Press, and he is the author of influential works such as 'Pictorial Formal Aspects of Shape,' 'Shape Grammars,' and 'Algorithmic Aesthetics: Computer Models for Criticism in Design Arts' alongside J. Gips. Stiny also serves as a member of Editorial Boards for journals within Planning and Design.
