Tony Verboom obtained his PhD from the University of Cape Town in 2000. He conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Missouri-Saint Louis from 2000 to 2001, followed by a lectureship at UCT. His academic career progressed, leading to his appointment as a full professor in 2022. From January 2021 to December 2023, he served as the Head of the Department of Biological Sciences and as the Director of the Bolus Herbarium at UCT. In January 2024, he took on the role of Professor of Plant Taxonomy and Geography, a position jointly hosted by the University of Gothenburg and the Gothenburg Botanical Garden. Verboom's research interests focus on phylogenetic endemism, ancestral area inference, and the historical refugia of the Greater Cape Floristic Region, which are reflected in several publications regarding plant phylogeny and biogeography.
