Biography

George Allen O. Villanueva is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism at Texas A&M University. His research primarily focuses on understanding the experiences of marginalized communities of color as they navigate material realities and structural oppression, particularly as these experiences intersect with social identities related to race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and class. Villanueva's work explores the role of communication, media, activism, and expressive culture in supporting place-based advocacy and social change within these communities. He employs an interdisciplinary approach, drawing from critical theoretical frameworks in communication, anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies, and engages in scholarship that promotes equitable and inclusive futures. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Black Studies and History from the University of California at Santa Barbara, a Master's in Global Media Communications from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a PhD in Communication with a Graduate Certificate in Visual Anthropology from the University of Southern California. Before joining Texas A&M, he served as an Assistant Professor and subsequently Associate Professor at the School of Communication at Loyola University of Chicago.
