Biography

Georgette Zirbes is an accomplished artist and educator in ceramics, serving as an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor Emerita at the University of Michigan's School of Art and Design since she began teaching there in 1970. She holds a B.A. in Fine Arts Art Education from DePauw University and an M.A. in Ceramics from Ohio State University. Before her tenure at the University of Michigan, she taught at Eastern Michigan University and Washtenaw Community College and also worked within the New York City Public Schools. Zirbes’s research interests include traditional and contemporary visual arts, and she has actively participated in various residencies, including the prestigious Fulbright grants that allowed her to research ceramic arts in Japan and Czechoslovakia. This experience has inspired her work and contributed to her extensive portfolio, which includes numerous exhibitions and workshops worldwide. She has received several awards for her contributions to education and the arts, including the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award in Creative Performing Arts from DePauw University. Zirbes continues to influence the field of ceramics through her creative work and teaching, focusing on fostering connections within the international community of artists.
