Biography

Georgia Karagiorgi is an Associate Professor of Physics at Columbia University and a member of the Data Science Institute. She received her Ph.D. in Experimental High Energy Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2010. Her primary research interests lie in experimental particle physics, particularly in the search for new physics in the neutrino sector using particle accelerator-based and large underground neutrino experiments. Her work includes the discovery and study of rare processes, as well as advancements in the generation of neutrino detectors which requires the handling of large data streams, often reaching multiple terabytes per second. Currently, she is focused on high data rate environments and the exploration of digital data processing techniques. Additionally, she is investigating the implementation of machine learning algorithms on field-programmable gate arrays. Throughout her career, she has received several prestigious awards, including the NSF CAREER Award in 2018, as well as the APS Mitsuyoshi Tanaka Thesis Prize in 2012. She is currently serving as the Technical Lead for the data acquisition system of the planned Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment in the United States.
