Biography

Georgina Waylen is the WJM Mackenzie Chair in Government and a Professor of Politics at the University of Manchester since 2012. She previously served as a Professor of Politics at the University of Sheffield and has taught at the Universities of Salford and East Anglia. Currently, she is a visiting professor at King's College London and has held visiting positions at Harvard University, Simon Fraser University in Canada, the University of Witswatersrand in South Africa, and Stanford University in the USA. Waylen has co-directed the Feminism and Institutionalism International Network (FIIN) and is a member of the Academy of Social Sciences. She holds a fellowship from the Leverhulme Trust to examine the UK Conservative Party and was the Principal Investigator of a five-year European Research Council Advanced Grant titled 'Understanding Institutional Change: Gender Perspective' from 2012 to 2017. Her research interests encompass comparative politics and political economy with a focus on gender politics, international political economy, transitions to democracy, and governance institutions. Over the past 20 years, she has extensively researched democratization, culminating in her book, 'Engendering Transitions: Women's Mobilization, Institutions, and Gender Outcomes,' which received the 2008 APSA Victoria Schuck prize. Georgina continues to explore themes related to gendered ritual in parliament and feminist institutionalism through collaborations in her ongoing research projects.
