Biography

Gerald R. Fink is the Margaret Herman Sokol Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Core Member of the Whitehead Institute. His research focuses on fungal pathogens, specifically their ability to invade the human body, evade the immune system, and establish infections. Fink investigates the molecular mechanisms that allow fungi to penetrate tissues and grow in hostile environments. Through the application of genetics, biochemistry, and genomics, he seeks to understand the success factors of the Candida albicans pathogen and how fungal pathogens develop antibiotic resistance. Additionally, he explores how these organisms manage to change their genetic composition rapidly. Although Fink’s lab is no longer accepting students, his extensive career has been marked by significant contributions to the field of genetics and microbiology.
