Dr. Gerald Fried

Biography

Gerald Fried is a Professor of Surgery and Associate Dean for Education Technology & Innovation at McGill University, where he directs the Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning. He served as the Edward W. Archibald Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at McGill and was Surgeon-in-Chief at the McGill University Health Centre from January 2010 to January 2020. Dr. Fried completed his general surgery residency at McGill and held clinical fellowships in gastrointestinal surgery and endoscopy at Ohio State University, followed by a research fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He is a key figure in developing clinical practices in gastrointestinal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and endoscopy, holding several endowed chairs in these areas. His commitment to education has been recognized with multiple teaching awards and his election to the McGill Honour Role for Educational Excellence. Dr. Fried is influential in surgical education and innovation, having established significant programs in minimally invasive surgery and developed the MISTELS laparoscopic simulator. He has given over 300 invited lectures internationally and has widely published on topics related to surgical education and minimally invasive procedures. Notably, he received the Meritorious Service Cross from the Governor General of Canada for his leadership in developing minimally invasive surgery in Canada.
