Dr. Gerald Sandy

Biography

Gerald Sandy is a Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia, specializing in Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies. His research interests primarily focus on the heritage of the ancient novel, exploring both its theory and practice. Sandy's work emphasizes the significance of Hellenism in France during the sixteenth century, particularly through the lens of Greek and Latin literary exchanges. He has undertaken a notable research project funded by the UBC Hampton Fund Research Grant, which seeks to document Guillaume Budé's critical contributions to the establishment and development of Hellenic studies during this period. This project aims to utilize primarily unexplored correspondence from Budé, a leading figure among the humanists of Western Europe between 1510 and 1536, to shed light on the processes that led to the rise of Hellenic studies, culminating in Budé's appointment as a royal lecturer at the Collège Royal, now known as the Collège de France. Furthermore, the project involves employing graduate students as technical consultants to create and maintain a sophisticated database for organizing the substantial amounts of varied information found within Budé's letters and related documents.
