Biography

Gerald Shulman is the George R. Cowgill Professor of Medicine and Professor of Cellular and Molecular Physiology at Yale School of Medicine. He is an Emeritus Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and co-director of the Yale Diabetes Research Center. His research has significantly advanced the understanding of type 2 diabetes and the molecular mechanisms of ectopic lipid accumulation that leads to insulin resistance in the liver and muscle. He has developed new therapeutic approaches for treating type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Dr. Shulman's accolades include the Banting Medal for Lifetime Scientific Achievement from the American Diabetes Association, the Solomon Berson Award from the American Physiological Society, and the Manpei Suzuki International Prize for Diabetes Research. He is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physiological Society, and has been elected to several prestigious organizations, including the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences.
