Biography

Gerald Voorhees earned his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 2008 and holds a B.S. in Speech Communication from the University of Texas at Austin, obtained in 2002. He is a Senior Fellow in the Honors Program at the College of Communication. Voorhees' research focuses on games, new media, identity, and culture, particularly the public discourse surrounding games and new media, and the rhetorics of race and ethnicity in mediated public discourse. He is the co-editor of the book series 'Approaches to Digital Game Studies' published by Bloomsbury since 2012 and has served as managing editor for a trilogy published by Palgrave-MacMillan, including titles like 'Feminism in Play', 'Masculinities in Play', and 'Queerness in Play', all released in 2018. He has held leadership positions such as the President of the Canadian Game Studies Association (2021-2023) and contributed to various academic boards and committees related to game studies. Prior to joining the University of Waterloo in Fall 2013, he taught at Oregon State University, creating a Game Interactive Media Design track and teaching various courses in communication and media studies. His selected publications include various books and articles focused on methodologies and critiques in game studies.
