Gerry McCartney graduated from medicine at the University of Glasgow and completed his GP vocational training in Paisley. While working as a junior doctor, he earned an honors degree in Economics Development from the University of London. He entered the Public Health training scheme, initially working with NHS Argyll and Clyde and NHS Greater Glasgow Clyde. During this time, he contributed to the 2007 E.coli outbreak response in Paisley and performed needs assessments for communities in the east end of Glasgow. He attained his MD from the MRC Social Public Health Sciences Unit (SPHSU) focusing on the impacts of the Commonwealth Games. In 2010, he became the Head of the Scottish Public Health Observatory (ScotPHO) at NHS Health Scotland and Public Health Scotland. In September 2021, he took on the role of Professor of Wellbeing Economy at the University of Glasgow. His research interests include redesigning economic systems for health service delivery, understanding population health trends, health inequalities, and the political economy of health.
