Gerhardt Meurer is a Professor and Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia. His research interests focus on the interrelationship between the interstellar medium and galaxies, examining star populations and the effects of dark matter. He investigates how star formation in galaxies is influenced by the properties of the interstellar medium, contributing to the understanding of the 'Star Formation Law' and the distribution of stellar masses through the 'Initial Mass Function'. His work is primarily observational, employing ground-based and space telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the Galex Space Telescope, as well as the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. Meurer is the principal investigator of several large surveys, including the WALLABY survey, which utilizes the ASKAP telescope, and others such as SINGG and SUNGG, aimed at understanding star formation in nearby galaxies. He received his PhD in Astrophysics from the Australian National University in 1990, where he conducted research on the evolution of blue compact dwarf galaxies.
