Biography

Gerónimo Barrera de la Torre is a geographer whose research interests lie at the intersections of political and historical geographies, critical cartographies, and political ecology. His work focuses on how peoples’ relationships to land, territory, and landscape engage with wide-reaching environmental policies, colonialism, and statism. Gerónimo employs collaborative methods, particularly social mapping and videography, to highlight the multiple geographies and ways of knowing that inform epistemic social justice efforts. He has worked closely with communities in Oaxaca for over a decade on issues ranging from forest conservation and agrarian change to social mapping and local knowledges. Currently, he is in the final stage of producing a feature documentary film that explores the consequences and experiences of the international carbon offset market for Indigenous campesino communities in Mexico.
