Biography

Gerrit Luinstra is a professor at the University of Hamburg, leading the research group at the Institute of Technical and Macromolecular Chemistry. He joined the university in 2008, taking on a chair previously held by Professor Kaminsky. His research mainly focuses on catalytic polymerization with an emphasis on olefins, pyrolysis of plastic waste, and the synthesis of valuable monomers. Prior to his appointment at the University of Hamburg, Luinstra worked in the Department of Polymer Research at BASF SE in Ludwigshafen from 1999 to 2008, where he developed new catalytic polymerization reactions involving polar compounds. He has also served as a Research Fellow at the California Institute of Technology under Professor Bercaw from 1991 to 1993. Luinstra's academic credentials include a solid foundation in chemistry education at the University of Groningen, culminating in a PhD in organotitanium chemistry. He was awarded his Habilitation in 2000, after completing his research in the field of catalytic (co)polymerization with Professor Brintzinger in Konstanz.
