Biography

Gerry Stoker works part-time at the University of Southampton as Chair of Governance. His research interests encompass democratic renewal, governance failings, and responses to place-based politics, as well as behavior change and the role of trust in political institutions. Stoker's early work focused on local government and urban politics, with notable publications including 'Remaking Planning' (1989) and 'Politics Local Government' (1988). His broader focus on governance can be seen in widely cited articles and co-authored books such as 'Holistic Governance' (2002) and 'Governance Theory and Practice' (2009). Stoker has made substantial contributions to political science, including editing the four editions of 'Theory and Methods in Political Science' alongside David Marsh. His work often utilizes field experiments to explore civic action and nudging behavior change, which he detailed in his publication 'Nudge, Think, Experimenting Ways Change Civic Behaviour' (2011/19). More recently, he has delved into the dismal state of politics in democracies, evidenced in his books 'Politics Matters' (2006/2017) and 'Good Politician' (2018).
