Biography

Gert-Jan Burgers is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He directs the interfaculty research institute CLUE+, which focuses on Culture, Cognition, History, and Heritage, involving approximately 250 researchers across diverse disciplines such as Humanities, Theology, Social Sciences, and Law. Burgers is the coordinator of the Pan-European H2020 Marie Curie International Training Network 'Heriland: Cultural Heritage Planning for European Landscapes'. His previous positions include Director at the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome and Head of the Heritage of Ancient Studies department. Throughout his academic career, he has engaged in urban and rural landscape studies, emphasizing critical spatial heritage studies. His recent work investigates the intersection of heritage and spatial planning, and he has led numerous archaeological field projects in Italy since 2004, while also building a substantial international network in heritage management. His teaching encompasses Landscape Studies and Critical Spatial Heritage Studies, specializing in Mediterranean archaeology, and he coordinates a Pan-European PhD training network. Burgers welcomes PhD applications in various topics related to heritage and landscape archaeology.
