Biography

Prof. Gertjan Medema is a principal microbiologist at KWR since 1996 and has served as a part-time chair of Water & Health at Delft University of Technology since 2009. He has also been a visiting professor in Water & Health at Michigan State University from 2018 to 2022. His research focuses on understanding the transmission of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance in water systems through experimental, field, and modeling research. This includes the development of detection and removal methods for pathogens, conducting Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessments (QMRA), and providing advice on the design of safe water systems and policies. Prof. Medema initiated research on sewage surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and has published extensively on this topic. He has inspired research teams to start wastewater surveillance programs across various regions. Additionally, he coordinated a joint research program with the Netherlands water utilities and has served as an advisor for microbiological drinking water guidelines and water reuse guidelines for the European Commission.
