Biography

Gesine Manuwald is a Professor at University College London in the Department of Greek and Latin. Her academic journey began with a strong interest in classics, studying at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in Germany, and spending a formative year as an affiliate student at UCL. She completed her PhD focused on the imperial epic poet Valerius Flaccus and later achieved a Habilitation on the Roman dramatic genre fabula praetexta. Over the years, she has participated in several significant research projects, including a five-year research fellowship funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, enabling her to delve into Cicero's Philippics and publish widely on topics such as Roman Republican drama and Neo-Latin poetry. Since joining UCL in 2007, she has taught various modules on Cicero, Roman drama, historiography, and epic, while also supervising students in Latin literature. Gesine has held significant administrative roles, serving as Head of the Department and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Her contributions extend to co-editing book series and engaging in community initiatives within classical studies, highlighted by her election as a member of Academia Europaea in 2014.
