Biography

Ghada Alsaleh is an Associate Professor at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences. Her academic journey began with pursuing an MSc and doctoral research at the University of Strasbourg, focusing on the role of fibroblast-like synoviocytes in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Contrasting with the traditional view of these cells as passive victims of the disease, Ghada's research illustrated that they exhibit behaviors akin to innate immune cells and produce inflammatory agents that contribute to joint degradation. In 2017, she joined the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology at Oxford as a postdoctoral researcher, where she delved into the effects of aging on biological processes, uncovering a decrease in TFEB expression in human lymphoid cells, which impacts immune responses in the elderly. Additionally, Ghada has been instrumental in establishing the United Kingdom's inaugural Space Innovation Lab at the Botnar Institute, aimed at advancing research in cellular and molecular biology related to space exploration. Her recent research proposal focuses on utilizing TFEB protein expression to identify new therapeutic targets for osteoarthritis, a common yet under-treated condition.
