Dr. Gian Claudia Sciara

Biography

Gian-Claudia Sciara is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, where she specializes in transportation policy, planning finance, and land use integration. Her academic career has been significantly influenced by her tenure as a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, focusing on the interplay of governance structures and transportation planning practices. Dr. Sciara critically examines the institutional frameworks that shape contemporary planning, especially in relation to climate change and sustainability. She has directed attention towards metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), which play a crucial role in directing U.S. transportation investments. Her research portfolio addresses the dual challenges of reducing car dependency while enhancing accessibility in metropolitan regions. Prior to her current role, Dr. Sciara was a professional researcher at the University of California-Davis Institute of Transportation Studies and worked for Parsons Brinckerhoff as a Senior Consultant.
