Biography

Gianluca Lazzi is a Provost Professor of Ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine and of Electrical Engineering at the Viterbi School of Engineering, University of Southern California. He previously held the position of USTAR Professor and Chair at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Utah from 2009 to 2017. Over the past two decades, he has focused his research on artificial retina technology aimed at restoring partial vision for the blind. Currently, he serves as the Principal Investigator in a National Institutes of Health-supported research project on multiscale modeling of neural excitation. He has published more than 200 papers across various journals and conference proceedings, contributing to the fields of bioelectromagnetics, liquid metal electronics, antennas, wireless electromagnetics, and computational neuroscience. His work has been highlighted in major publications such as Forbes and MIT Technology Review. Lazzi has also been involved in various capacities with professional organizations, including serving as Editor-in-Chief of prestigious journals in the field. His entrepreneurial endeavors include co-founding Teveri LLC, which focuses on smart clothing technologies. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and AIMBE, and has received numerous awards for his contributions to engineering education and biomedical research.
