Biography

Gianluca Piazza is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and the Director of the John and Claire Bertucci Nanotechnology Laboratory, also known as the CMU Nanofabrication Facility. He holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Before joining CMU, he was a Wilf Family Term Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on piezoelectric micro/nano electromechanical systems (M/NEMS), RF wireless communication, optomechanics, and chemical/biological detection, alongside general interest areas in micro/nano fabrication techniques and integrating micro/nano devices into state-of-the-art electronics. With over 10 years of experience in working with piezoelectric materials and devices, he has acquired several patents in the field of micromechanical resonators from industry. He received the IBM Young Faculty Award in 2006 and has won multiple student Paper Awards at the IEEE Frequency Control Symposium and the IEEE Ultrasonic Symposium. Additionally, he serves as an associate editor for the IEEE Journal MicroElectroMechanical Systems (JMEMS).
