Dr. Gideon Cohen Nehemia

Biography

Gideon Cohen-Nehemia is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto and a staff surgeon in the Cardiovascular Surgery department at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He is a proud Toronto native who graduated as the Valedictorian from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine, in 1992. Dr. Cohen completed his surgical residency in General Surgery and subsequently enrolled in the Surgical Scientist Program in 1995, specializing in Cardiovascular Sciences. He has obtained Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in molecular biology, contributing to his extensive knowledge and expertise in cardiac surgery. Dr. Cohen completed his Cardiovascular Surgical training at the University of Toronto in 2001 and was appointed as the Chief Cardiac Surgical Fellow at the Cleveland Clinic, where he received the Surgical Excellence Award in 2001. He has published over 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to multiple book chapters, reflecting his commitment to ongoing research and education in the field. His clinical focus includes minimally invasive surgical techniques for valvular aortic surgery, arrhythmia surgery, and re-operative coronary bypass surgery. Since 2003, Dr. Cohen has led the Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgical Program at Schulich Heart Centre, making significant contributions to patient care in Canada.
