Dr. Gijsbert Oonk

Biography

Gijsbert Oonk is a full professor and Research Director in the Department of History at Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC). His research primarily focuses on migration, citizenship, and identity, emphasizing global history and the role of sports in these themes. Oonk has led the Sport Nation program and has been involved in significant collaborative research projects across Europe, particularly addressing national identity through the lens of football and the Modern Olympic Games. He has contributed to the academic community through various publications that explore critical issues surrounding sport history and migration. Notable projects include the Robert Schuman Fellowship at the European University Institute and the Jean Monnet (ad Personam) Chair awarded in 2019, promoting European integration studies.
