Gijsje Koenderink is a full professor in Bionanoscience at Delft University of Technology. He received his MSc degree in Chemistry (cum laude, 1998) and Ph.D. (cum laude, 2003) from Utrecht University. He trained as a Marie Curie postdoctoral Fellow at VU University Amsterdam and Harvard University. In 2006, he established the Biological Soft Matter group at the NWO Institute AMOLF, where he headed the Living Matter Department from 2014 to 2019. Koenderink's research focuses on quantitative experimental studies of material properties of cells and tissues, combining synthetic biology approaches and multiscale physical characterization. His group collaborates closely with biological and biomedical groups to address the role of cell and tissue mechanics in disease and tissue regeneration. He has received several distinctions, including the NWO VIDI (2008), membership in the Young Academy KNAW (2008), ERC Starting Grant (2013), NWO VICI (2019), and the P-G. de Gennes Prize (2018).
