Biography

Professor Gil Porat specializes in laser physics and ultrafast nonlinear optics. He earned his Bachelor and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Tel Aviv University in 2007 and 2014, respectively. His doctoral research focused on theoretically developing nonlinear optics analogues of coherent atomic processes, which were demonstrated experimentally, leading to advancements in optical frequency conversion. Prior to joining the University of Alberta in 2018, he completed significant postdoctoral research at the Weizmann Institute of Science and JILA, working on ultrafast nonlinear optics methods. His research at JILA contributed to the development of extreme ultraviolet frequency comb lasers and efficient techniques for overcoming challenges in extreme ultraviolet generation. Currently, Professor Porat leads research on room temperature quantum technologies involving nuclear spins in noble gases, and investigates applications in standoff quantum sensing and optical magnetometry. His long-term research goals include developing highly sensitive laser-based quantum sensing for environmental monitoring and advancing techniques in quantum magnetometry that have broader applications in fields such as biomedical diagnostics and natural resources exploration.
