Biography

Gil Weinberg is the Founding Director of the Center for Music Technology at Georgia Tech, where he also serves as a Professor. He leads the Robotic Musicianship group, which focuses on developing artificial creativity and musical expression in robots and augmented humans. His research prominently features a marimba-playing robotic musician named Shimon, which utilizes machine learning for jazz improvisation. Additionally, he works on prosthetic robotic arms designed for amputees to restore and enhance their drumming capabilities. Weinberg has presented his work at prestigious venues around the globe, including the Kennedy Center, World Economic Forum, Ars Electronica, and TED-Ed. His music has been performed by renowned orchestras such as the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and the National Irish Symphony Orchestra. He has disseminated his research through numerous journal articles and patents. Weinberg earned his MS and PhD degrees in Media Arts and Sciences from MIT and holds a BA from Tel Aviv University in an interdisciplinary program fostering excellence.
