Biography

Professor Gil Westmeyer focuses on biological engineering, next-generation molecular sensors, actuators, functional imaging, and remote spatiotemporal control of cellular processes. His work involves the engineering of mammalian cells, nanotechnology, and synthetic biology techniques combined with multiscale molecular imaging, which includes correlative electron microscopy and magnetic resonance imaging. Westmeyer's research applies genetically controlled molecular tools to dynamic analyses of organoids and neurobehavioral imaging in preclinical model organisms, aiming to dissect cellular network functions for future applications in imaging-controlled tissue engineering and cell therapies. He studied medicine and philosophy in Munich and conducted his doctoral research on the molecular basis of Alzheimer's disease under Professor Christian Haass, later receiving part of his clinical education at Harvard Medical School. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow with Professor Alan Jasanoff at M.I.T before joining TUM. Westmeyer also serves as the Director of the Institute for Synthetic Biomedicine at Helmholtz Center Munich.
