Dr. Giles Atkinson

Biography

Giles Atkinson is an expert in Environmental Policy, currently associated with the Department of Geography and Environment at the London School of Economics (LSE). As a trained environmental economist, he has published extensively on sustainability and economic development. His research examines how policymakers construct measures of economic progress, using methods such as wealth accounting and natural capital accounting. His work focuses on cost-benefit analysis related to the environment and the valuation of natural capital, emphasizing environmental equity. At LSE, Atkinson is a member of the UK Natural Capital Committee and has contributed to various initiatives such as the Policy Technical Experts Committee of the World Bank's WAVES partnership and the Advisory Board for TEEB (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity). He is also a member of the Steering Group for the Natural Capital Accounting Project at the UK Office for National Statistics and part of the Scientific Committee for the UK Network for Environmental Economists. His expertise includes environmental policy, environmental valuation, natural capital accounting, and sustainable development.
