Gilles Gendreau was a professor at the Université de Montréal from 1953 until 1991, significantly contributing to the development of an educational intervention approach for individuals facing adaptation challenges. His writings and teachings laid the groundwork for a new field of study: psychoeducation. Committed to addressing the immense needs of at-risk youth, Gendreau was instrumental in the rehabilitation of young delinquents and played a key role in the development and influence of the Boscoville rehabilitation center from 1948 to 1972. In 1953, alongside Jeannine Guindon, he founded the Centre de psychoéducation du Québec to train specialized educators, which he directed for ten years. He later collaborated in establishing the École de psychoéducation, directing it from 1982 to 1985. Appointed professor emeritus at his retirement in 1991, Gendreau remained active, founding the Order of Guidance Counselors and Psychoeducators of Quebec and engaging in innovative projects and research. He authored numerous significant works in psychoeducation and was honored with the Medal of the Université du Québec at Trois-Rivières in 1999 and an honorary doctorate from the Université du Québec en Outaouais in 2003. Gendreau passed away in 2010.
